The Red Queen by Matt Ridley
Disclaimer: For any of you (that includes you, Wendy Wright!) who are offended by the idea of all humans sharing a common family tree that stems from a pre-ape ancestor, stay away. This book will either offend you or confound you as you try to insert your personal theories of science.
In this book, Ridley answers brilliant questions that even I never thought to ask:
Why do humans have sex at all?
Why not just clone-like reproduction?
Why such differences between men and women--both in the brain and in the bedroom?
Why are there two genders, not three or a dozen?
In the wild, under what circumstances do you find polygamy, monogamy, infanticide, polyandry, and cuckoldry? Why?
Every chapter, every page, every sentence is rewarding.
If you are looking for a thoughtful, scientific approach as to why you act the way you act--and why your parents acted the way they acted in order to produce you--this book will blow you away.
