What the hell am I supposed to do in a COLLEGE CLASS, which is supposed to be ACADEMIC and a melting pot of OPINIONS, when a group of students insist on pointing out that abstinence-only programs really are the best for adolescent sex education in high school.
Their reasoning? "That's what the church believes."
I bit my tongue for every time I wanted to shout the words "ignorant," "naive," "destructive," and "denial!"
Is it so much to ask for a conversation about sex education without bringing THAT into play? What college am I attending? UVU, that's what I thought! This is the Jack Mormon school!

Stick up for it. You have reason on your side. I should e-mail you the op-ed I wrote for the BYU political review last year comparing Utah and the Netherlands with regard to sex ed.
Yes, you should!

Do it!
My goodness. That is ridiculous. I mean it's fine if they have good reasons for being abstinent, but if it's only because "that's what the church believes," then they are completely missing the point. I am abstinent other reasons; not just because the church tells me to be.
It's like the movie Mean Girls; you can't preach, "don't have sex, because you will get pregnant and die," and then hand out a bunch of condoms. The way schools tip-toe around the subject is not doing any good. I think in sex-ed, the facts need to be stated so adolescents are actually educated on the matter. (Apparently this idea is too far-fetched for people to understand. It's even in the name: sex-EDUCATION.) Adolescents can make a choice for themselves whether or not to remain abstinent.
Sorry, Lindz. I would like to say BYU isn't that ignorant, but they still are. Yay for Happy Valley.
I like turtles.
ugh, you should go to high school in DC sometimes. It's funny teaching abstinance to a group of kids that have been sexually active since they were 12.
Teenagers have sex!?!?!
But isn't that Utah??? Don't they KNOW what the Church preaches???
...
I can't even continue that line of thinking. Sorry.
Bottom line is, stand up. You're not at a religious university, so be blatant. Let them think you're a Hindu from New Jersey, a Jew from Zimbabwe, or an Atheist from effing Forks, but stir the pot, would you? We're depending on you here!!!
