My dad swears by Edith Hamilton's collection of mythology, but... I find it a little dry. A little too textbook, too archivial (is that a word? Archive-like is what I mean).
Thomas Bulfinch's collection includes Greek, Roman, British, Irish, and Norse mythology. Nothing from the Eastern side of the world, unfortunately.
Each story, whether it's Echo and Narcissus, Arthur and Morgan le Faye, the Trojan War, the beautiful Freya... They all remind me of growing up, when Dad would pull one of these timeless stories out of his back pocket for a drive downtown, a bedtime story when a friend was sleeping over, or a picnic when the conversation lulled.
