Shopgirl by Steve Martin
This book, written by a man, surprisingly captures the thought process, observations, and secret daily routines of a woman. Every word draws me in, and although the story is quite simple, Steve Martin's choice of using present tense makes the colors and details pop out of the pages. I instantly found myself in the main character Mirabelle, and fell in love with the obnoxious slacker Jeremy.
It is at times melancholy, but there is a twist of happiness that somehow feeds into the words, a quiet confidence. This novella touches on the loneliness that we all know so well.
